Patna has a wide range of centres, from hospital-attached psychiatry units to single-room facilities with no clinical staff at all. The difference is rarely visible from a signboard or a phone call. These five checks separate them.
Registration and licensing
A de-addiction centre in Bihar should be able to show a registration or licence issued under the applicable state health or social-welfare authority, and, where it provides medical care with beds, registration as a clinical establishment. Grant-in-aid centres funded under the national de-addiction programme also hold a sanction letter from the district administration or the implementing ministry.
- Ask to see the original certificate, not a photocopy or a phone photo.
- Note the registration number and the issuing authority, and check that the name on it matches the name on the building.
- Check the validity date — lapsed registrations are common.
- If a centre cannot produce anything at all, treat that as a decision, not a delay.
Who provides medical care
Alcohol and sedative withdrawal can be medically dangerous. Seizures and delirium tremens are real risks in a heavy, long-term drinker who stops abruptly, and they need a doctor with access to emergency support — not supervision by staff who are themselves in recovery.
- Ask for the name and qualification of the psychiatrist or physician attached to the centre.
- Ask how often that doctor is physically present — daily, twice a week, or only on call.
- Ask what happens at 2am if a patient has a seizure, and which hospital they transfer to.
- Ask whether detox medication is prescribed by that doctor and recorded in a file you can see.
Qualified counselling staff
Peer support from someone who has recovered is genuinely valuable — but it is not a substitute for trained counselling, and many Patna centres are staffed entirely by peers. Both should be present.
- Ask how many counsellors are employed, and their qualifications (psychology, social work, or a recognised addiction-counselling certification).
- Ask how many individual counselling sessions a patient actually gets per week.
- Ask whether family counselling is included, and whether it happens in person.

Government and low-cost de-addiction centres in Patna
Government and NGO-run de-addiction services are the least advertised and most under-used option in Patna, and for many families they are the only affordable one. Broadly, three routes exist:
Hospital psychiatry route: the psychiatry department of a government medical college hospital in Patna can assess a substance-use problem, manage medically supervised withdrawal, and refer onward. You usually start at the general OPD counter and ask for a psychiatry referral. Treatment in the government system is free or nominally charged; medicines may be partly chargeable.
Grant-in-aid IRCA route: Integrated Rehabilitation Centres for Addicts are NGO-run residential centres funded under the central social-justice ministry's de-addiction programme, with capped fees or free beds for people who cannot pay.
